In 2008, Barbara Ford-Coates was named the Outstanding County Tax Collector in the United
States as selected by an independent panel of judges.  The award was given on behalf of the
National Association of County Collectors, Treasurers & Finance Officers at their Annual
Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2009
Biz941 named her as a "Best Boss" and in 2011, her
office was recognized as one of only 12 in Florida to receive the award for Excellence in Finance
Operations.

She joined the Tax Collector's office in 1975 and worked her way up to the position of Assistant Tax
Collector.  She was first elected to the top position in 1984. In 1988, 1992 and 2008 she was re-
elected with the highest vote count of any candidate (local, state or federal) on the Sarasota
County ballot.  She was re-elected in 1996, 2000 and 2004 without opposition.  

Barbara was born and raised in Virginia and has lived in Sarasota County since 1972. She has a
bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and is the only elected official in Sarasota
County who has earned the national designation of
Certified Public Manager through Florida State
University.  

She is a past president of the Florida Tax Collectors Association and the
National Association of
County Collectors, Treasurers & Finance Officers. She also served on the Board of Directors of the
National Association of Counties.

The League of Women Voters of Sarasota County  honored Barbara for her outstanding public
service and
Girls Inc. of Sarasota County recognized her with the "She Knows Where She’s Going"
award.  For many years Barbara has been active with the
Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida and  
currently is the leader of Girl Scout Troop 254.
 As part of the celebration of the 100th birthday of
Girl Scouts, she was recently named one of 100 "Girl Scout Greats" in the United States.  


The late Governor Lawton Chiles appointed Barbara to the
1998 Florida Constitution Revision
Commission where she received the Chairman's Award for her successful efforts to provide
information to the public about the revisions on the 1998 ballot.  In 2000, the American Jewish
Committee named her as one of 12 national women leaders who were sent to Israel to participate
in an educational seminar.

Married to Brian Ford-Coates since 1972, their
extended family includes seven daughters, three
sons-in-law, and nine beautiful grandchildren.
